Supported by Google.org and various philanthropic allies, this initiative is broadening its reach to equip more cities with the ability to conduct large-scale civic discussions without incurring costs. Local officials interested in utilizing these tools are encouraged to join the Jigsaw Partner Program.
Jigsaw’s AI technology allows local leaders to engage with numerous residents simultaneously, simplifying the process for cities to grasp public needs when making significant decisions. Currently, several cities are employing this technology to strategize for the future based on genuine community input, with Google extending its assistance to enable more governments worldwide to adopt these tools for better citizen services.
Launched a year ago by Jigsaw, a tech incubator within Google, the Sensemaking AI suite offers open-source tools to help public leaders develop policies and programs that align with community needs. As part of Google.org’s mission to aid governments in utilizing AI for enhanced public services, the organization is backing the new Jigsaw Partner Program with a collaborative fund, inviting local government leaders globally to participate.
Through this initiative, localities can leverage AI to conduct rapid, extensive civic conversations at no operational cost, gaining insights into community needs that can inform essential services. Cities like Bowling Green, Kentucky, have seen results, using feedback from 8,000 residents to shape a 25-year growth plan, with similar projects underway in Chattanooga, Tennessee, Riverside, California, Kitchener, Ontario, and others. Civic leaders report that Sensemaking AI enables them to hear diverse voices, resulting in more informed policy decisions.
Google.org is partnering with major philanthropic organizations, including Bloomberg Philanthropies and the David & Lucile Packard Foundation, to further expand the use of these tools in municipal settings. With this collaboration, they aim to ensure that civic leaders don’t operate in isolation and that constituents’ voices are heard without the need for them to raise their voices.
Governors, mayors, and local officials worldwide are invited to express their interest in employing Sensemaking AI through the Jigsaw Partners Program, working towards a future where every voice is a fundamental part of effective leadership.
