Vikram’s box office success proves Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth cannot be defeated by Kollywood’s new generation

Vikram, Kamal Haasan’s first release in four years, has come up as one of the most successful Tamil films of all time. The film has already crossed over 364 crore worldwide and is the highest-grossing Tamil film of the year. By giving another number one film of the year in Tamil cinema, now Kamal Haasan is the owner of an unusual and impressive record. He is only the second actor from the Tamil film industry to give the highest-grossing film of the year in five different decades. The only other person to do this in Tamil cinema is also a very popular name Rajinikanth.

In seven of the last ten years, a film starring either of the two has been the major hit of the year in Tamil cinema. Interestingly enough, the other three years have seen bilingual films – the two Baahubali films and Saaho – take the honour. In short, no Tamil star or film has been able to beat Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan at the box office for a decade; and that’s when both these men are in their 60s and 70s. This dominance proves that despite ageing, these two names continue to remain at the peak of Kollywood.
