Meta is introducing new parental supervision tools for its Threads app as part of its ongoing efforts to provide support for parents overseeing their teenagers’ use of Meta’s applications. Starting next week, parents and guardians in the United States will be able to access these tools through the Family Center, similar to other Meta apps.
Threads offers built-in protections for teen accounts, such as private profiles and restrictions on content visibility. With the new updates, parents will gain the ability to decide if teens under 16 can modify these settings to be less restrictive. Additionally, parents will be able to access new insights and controls.
How parental supervision functions on Threads
The parental supervision feature on Threads includes a variety of tools and insights designed to assist parents and guardians in supporting their teens. Once supervision is enabled, parents and guardians can:
- See time spent: View the time their teen spends on Threads each day over the past week, along with the average daily usage for that week.
- Set time limits: Establish daily limits for how long their teen can use Threads and restrict access during specific days and hours. These limits apply to the total time spent on Threads across all devices.
- Adjust sleep mode: Restrict access to Threads at night with notifications muted and auto-replies activated from 10 PM to 7 AM by default.
- Manage tagging: Control who is allowed to tag their teen in posts.
- Manage privacy and content preferences: Oversee and approve certain privacy settings and content preferences for their teen.
To establish supervision on Threads, parents can visit familycenter.meta.com/supervision. Meta plans to continue developing these supervision tools to facilitate easier access for parents, providing comprehensive control and visibility to enhance their teen’s experience across Meta apps.
