Insights from our latest environmental report
Today, we are excited to unveil our 11th Environmental Report, offering a comprehensive overview of our sustainability achievements as we approach 2025. Key highlights from this year reveal that we have committed to over 12 gigawatts (GW) of new clean energy agreements in 2025 alone, which is roughly equivalent to the annual energy needs of a country like Greece upon full operation. Additionally, even with a significant rise in our electricity needs, we have managed to cut our operational emissions by 2%.
The report examines the challenges of maintaining rapid growth while being environmentally responsible and underscores our dedication to a sustainable future. At Google, we are committed to managing our environmental impact responsibly and leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) to benefit the planet. Although achieving our climate goals presents challenges, especially as our AI infrastructure expands faster than the pace of grid decarbonization, our focus remains on increasing accessible, affordable clean energy worldwide and advancing technologies that reduce emissions within our operations and the broader industry.
In the last five years, the rise of AI has been transformative, and we are proud of the balance we have struck between growth, innovation, and environmental goals. Google is one of the largest corporate buyers of clean energy globally. Since 2010, we have signed over 240 agreements to purchase nearly 35 GW of clean energy, adding enough capacity to power over 28 million U.S. homes, or roughly every residence in New York, Texas, and Pennsylvania combined. Our data center infrastructure, which uses 83% less overhead energy than the industry average, ensures efficient energy use.
Despite facing our largest increase in electricity demand in history, a 37% rise, we successfully reduced our operational emissions by 2% year-over-year and matched all our electricity consumption with renewable energy purchases for the ninth year in a row. This demonstrates that we can separate our rapid operational expansion from our carbon footprint. We achieve this by investing in dependable clean capacity on local grids supporting our data centers. We are also promoting advanced energy sources, such as nuclear and geothermal energy, and making long-term investments in breakthrough technologies like fusion.
Our commitment extends to our community, ensuring that our growth does not negatively impact local regions or other utility customers. Our energy agreements are structured to cover all power costs we incur. We also aim to provide affordable, reliable, and clean energy access to all communities where we operate.
In 2025, thanks to improvements in machine hardware efficiencies, software, compute efficiencies, and clean energy procurement, we avoided over 58 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO2e). Without these efforts, our 2025 carbon footprint would have been five times larger, highlighting the effectiveness of our decarbonization tools despite our rapid expansion.
Beyond energy, our focus on efficiency extends to water conservation. In 2025, our projects replenished around 7.7 billion gallons of water, equating to 78% of our freshwater consumption, moving us closer to our goal of replenishing more water than we use by 2030.
Our technological advancements also contribute to a sustainable future. Our data centers support AI products that aid billions globally in areas like science, health, and the economy. We see significant opportunities for AI in addressing environmental challenges. In 2025, our solutions helped reduce an estimated 41 million tCO2e, three times Google’s own emissions. Initiatives such as Google Earth, Nest thermostats, and fuel-efficient routing in Google Maps help others lower emissions.
We also contribute to safety during extreme events, providing timely information and AI advancements for forecasting natural disasters like wildfires and floods. Protecting the planet further, we developed AI tools like Perch and SpeciesNet, helping make nature conservation more effective and affordable.
As we create new AI solutions to tackle global issues, our goal is to maximize AI’s benefits for the planet while minimizing its resource needs. We remain dedicated to our ambitious climate targets, although challenges persist due to the growing demand for AI, increased electricity needs, and decarbonization hurdles. Our commitment to sustainability is unwavering, and we will continue to enhance AI efficiencies, clean energy, and innovation for a better future.
