Facebook launches verification badge for users
Every day, billions of users engage with Facebook to connect authentically, whether it’s through buying and selling on Facebook Marketplace, meeting new people on Facebook Dating, or participating in discussions within Groups. With the increasing ease of content, profile, and message generation through AI, Facebook aims to ensure users can recognize when they are interacting with a real individual. To address this, Facebook is launching Facebook Verified, a complimentary badge for users.
How it works
Facebook Verified requires users to complete a straightforward selfie-based verification process. This involves recording a short video selfie that is then compared against existing profile photos to confirm authenticity. The process is free and usually only takes a few minutes. To be eligible for verification, accounts must adhere to Facebook’s trust and safety standards.
Facebook Verified is available to eligible Facebook users who are 18 years or older and in good standing with Community Standards, particularly those against fraud, scams, and deceitful practices. The service is currently unavailable for Pages or ProMode accounts. Facebook is introducing this feature in phases, starting in selected markets and planning for a global rollout.
Where you’ll see it
Once verified, the badge will be displayed in key areas on Facebook, including Marketplace, Dating, Groups, and Profiles initially. Over time, badges will also appear on Feed posts. The verification process is a one-time event, and the badge will accompany users throughout their Facebook experience without any subscription fees.
When browsing Marketplace listings, viewing dating profiles, or exploring profiles in Groups, users will notice the Verified badge on those who have completed the verification process.
What the badge signifies
The Facebook Verified badge confirms that a profile belongs to a real person who has completed the selfie verification process and meets the platform’s trust and safety criteria. This provides users with a visible, quick indication of authenticity before engaging with listings, accepting dates, or joining conversations.
However, the presence of a Facebook Verified badge does not imply Facebook’s endorsement of the user or guarantee their trustworthiness. All users remain subject to Meta’s policies, including Community Standards and Commerce Policies.
As AI capabilities expand on Facebook, it becomes increasingly important to identify real users. Facebook Verified helps ensure that interactions on the platform remain grounded in genuine connections.
