Three new satellites launched to combat wildfires

Today saw the successful launch of three new FireSat satellites from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California. This launch enhances the FireSat program, a global effort driven by the nonprofit Earth Fire Alliance (EFA) to develop an extensive dataset on wildfires. Google Research has collaborated with key figures in the fire management community, including EFA and satellite manufacturer Muon Space, to create this specialized satellite constellation. The aim is to provide continuous coverage that fire agencies require to detect wildfires before they escalate.

This phase builds upon the progress made last year when FireSat’s initial pilot satellite was deployed into orbit. That mission effectively demonstrated the potential of sensor technology designed to identify early-stage wildfires as small as 5×5 meters. The pilot satellite has already detected small, low-intensity fires that were previously undetectable by existing satellites. The addition of these three new satellites incorporates this successful technology into an expanding network.

This achievement highlights what can be accomplished through the collaboration of technology companies, nonprofits, philanthropic organizations, and the private sector under a unified mission. As part of the initiative, Google.org has donated over $15 million to support the launch of these initial satellites. This marks a proud moment for the entire consortium and represents another significant advance in utilizing practical AI for climate resilience.

The satellites were onboard the SpaceX Transporter-17 vessel, which facilitated their deployment into space.
