Samsung Unveils USB4-Enabled P9 and P7 SSDs at Gamescom 2026: A Data-Driven Analysis
Samsung Electronics, a leader in memory technology, has introduced its latest line of portable solid-state drives (SSDs), the P9 and P7, featuring USB4 connectivity. This launch was announced at Gamescom 2026, the largest gaming event globally, held in Cologne, Germany from August 26 to August 30.
The P Series is engineered to address the escalating storage needs prompted by ultra-high-resolution video, AI content, and expansive gaming applications. It comprises the flagship P9, offering high-performance solutions for professional users, and the P7, tailored for everyday storage requirements.
Tommy Kwon, Vice President and Head of the Brand Product Biz Team at Samsung Electronics, commented, “As AI-driven content creation and high-resolution video become mainstream, the demand for rapid and reliable storage solutions grows. The P Series is crafted to deliver the performance needed for professionals and general users across various applications.”
P9: Enhanced Performance with USB4
The P9 utilizes USB4 technology, achieving sequential read speeds up to 4,000 megabytes-per-second (MB/s) and write speeds up to 3,800MB/s, effectively doubling the performance of its predecessor. For context, the previous 4-terabyte (TB) T9, with a USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 interface, offered speeds of up to 2,000MB/s.
Marking a technological milestone, the P9 is the first 8TB USB4 portable SSD capable of sustaining speeds up to 4,000MB/s. This innovation secured the P9 a CES 2026 Innovation Award.
Additionally, the P9 supports 12K direct recording, catering to professional production workflows by enabling efficient handling of RAW image files and ultra-high-resolution video.
P7: Comprehensive Storage Solutions for Daily Use
Incorporating USB4 technology, the P7 provides fast and adaptable storage suitable for work, entertainment, and daily activities. It ensures compatibility with numerous host devices, including desktops, laptops, smartphones, gaming consoles, and cameras.
Durability is a key feature of the P7, having passed 2-meter drop tests and shock and vibration durability assessments, safeguarding critical data during travel and outdoor use.
