Making global identification of AI-generated content easier
The Vice President of Science and Strategic Initiatives at Google DeepMind has shared how advancements in AI tools have made it crucial for users to have contextual information about the content they encounter online. This knowledge enables individuals to make informed choices about what to trust. Google SynthID, launched in 2023, plays a significant role in assisting people to recognize AI-generated media by using subtle watermarks on images, videos, and audio files. So far, more than 180 billion images and videos have been watermarked, along with audio content totaling 240,000 years.
In a previous year, an initial version of the SynthID Detector was introduced to aid media professionals in verifying AI-generated content. Now, the reach of this tool is being significantly extended. Starting today, everyone worldwide can access the SynthID Detector in English.
The new SynthID Detector enables users to easily ascertain whether an image, video, or audio file has been created using AI from Google or its partners, which include OpenAI, NVIDIA, Kakao, and, soon, Apple.
This detection tool complements other built-in verification features available in Google Search, the Gemini app, and Chrome. These features now manage over one million requests every day. This effort is part of Google’s commitment to provide more context about the media encountered on the internet, aiding users in confidently browsing the web.
