Google starts construction on its inaugural data center in Sweden

Google has commenced construction on a new data center in Horndal, Sweden, in response to the increasing demand for services such as Search, Google Cloud, and YouTube by individuals and businesses. This new facility is expected to create 100 direct jobs and signifies an important step in Google’s long-term presence in Sweden, which began with the establishment of its first office in 2004. The new data center aims to assist Swedish businesses, creators, and developers in their efforts to innovate and expand.

The facility has been designed with sustainability as a priority. It will utilize air cooling to reduce water consumption and will be equipped for off-site heat recovery, which can supply warmth to nearby homes and businesses. This development reinforces Google’s ongoing commitment to sustainability in Sweden, where it has contributed to the establishment of over 700 megawatts of renewable energy capacity since 2013.

In addition to building the data center, Google is launching a EUR 5 million fund to support community initiatives focusing on education, sustainability, and workforce development. This investment is intended to foster job creation and ensure that the digital economy offers opportunities for everyone in the area.
